How to enter a new hire (contractor) into PeopleSoft with no legal last name

How to enter a new hire (contractor) into PeopleSoft with no legal last name.  There is only one name on the Social Security Card.  Both First and Last name are required fields.  Please advise on how to proceed. What is the best practice followed by organizations in this scenario or case. I have read  articles where we can use either a ' ' or  '.' or even enter text like 'No Name' and save the information. Would like to understand  what impacts it might have.
