MRO item number is OEM parts# in EBS - Is this a best practice?

Hello,

We have been working on master data projects and are curious what other maintenance operations are doing for their spare parts.

  1. Creating their own, unique internal items in Oracle? (then using supplier item and cross references to link)
  2. Using whatever supplier and\or manufacture’s item is being purchased as their internal item in Oracle?
  3.  Or ?
Bit more context to the above. Our organization has ~70K MRO items, procurement is de-centralized at the site level (~35). Naming convention currently used to create these MRO items mirror the OEM part number. Example, MRO item number for bushing is 121710812. This is the OEM part#. We're currently disputing this approach. Our recommendation to business is to use universal part number and maintain supplier & their parts# as the child. This is easy for the buyer to search for the parts using semi intelligent names. Using ASL - buyer can better negotiate and source.

Howdy, Stranger!
