Asm error at end of Oracle RAC ha cluster19.3 base install

Fatal DBT-30003 Disk group ORAC01 creation failed. ORA-15018: disk group cannot be created ORA-15238 19.0.0.0 is not a valid value for attribute compatible.advm ORA-15477: cannot communicate with volume manager.

I am installing on a new server. A previous gridSetup.sh failed, and has modified the disk group that hold the ocr etc. My attempt went all the way to end. Asm instance was up and running, but the move to asm failed. How does one get around this error? I am hesitant to perform another deinstall, as my prior attempt on the other node was not successful. How does clean up after a failed, incomplete install?
