Real Application Security or Virtual Private Database

in Database Security Products (MOSC) Question

I have a requirement to limit the ability to view certain columns based on the role granted to direct login users. Is there a way to do this with either RAS or VPD? The RAS examples I have found all seem to deal with Application logins using an RAS user account not direct login and everything for VPD seems to be at the user level not the role which would be a nightmare to setup and maintain in our environment.
