What is mview 'summary' object?

Hello, I am wondering, what is mview 'summary' object? What are those records in dba_summaries? I was searching for that but any info is very scarce, mostly along lines: 'if you have troubles dropping mview, look for summary and drop it' and that's it. But WHAT is it?
