datapump jobs being logged in the system tablespace?

Hello, I'm a 16-year aspiring DBA and am about to do an import/export upgrade to 19c (from 12cR2), and just discovered during the import to 19c test that my weekly 12c database exports were unknowingly being logged (for the lack of a better word) in the system tablespace. With the system tablespace being the default for system user, it makes sense, but what is the point of tracking all this there and why are they so large? My system tablespace is 12GB while all other data takes up about 1GB. What did I do wrong?
