IIS worker process (w3wp.exe) disappears from task manager of webserver but leaves INACTIVE sessions

Hello


There is strange behavior observed recently at one of the systems in production.

Sometimes, after app pool restart, the w3wp.exe process disappears from the task manager of the webserver but the sessions that were associated with that program remain in INACTIVE state.

These INACTIVE sessions have caused locks twice in the last 1 month.

Also, these INACTIVE sessions do not stay forever. They disappear after some days. 

This is not reproducible every time.

Can someone please give pointers as to how should we proceed with troubleshooting of this issue?

Oracle: 12CR1 enterprise edition RAC
