Applying Out-of-Cycle Database Patches - opatch/opatchauto

​We are planning to follow the "Applying Out-of-Cycle Database Patches" to patch a standby database home from 19.9 to 19.12 in our ODA​ X8 HA.

Can we use the "opatch apply" (manually) to apply Database Release Update 19.12 or do we have to use the command "opatchauto apply -oh $ORACLE_HOME -inplace" according to the instructions?
