Purging WIP_PERIOD_BALANCES Table

We are facing the performance issue after fetching the table in this table while running the report. We have nearly 20gb data from the year 2012 onwards. Can we purge the partial data in the table? if we purge any issue will occur in the application(WIP)? Please confirm.
