Where to find advice on ESS Framework - Creating a Checkbox linking to core or custom EBS tables

We would like to create a Checkbox Item in ESS that links through to fields in core EBS forms to update them the same way the seeded checkboxes work. Can anyone point to any guidance documents to explain how to do this please ?
