How to make user defined columns in search results sortable?

I'm unable to to make user defined columns in our custom headline view results page sortable. The standard columns are sortable. I have made the columns sortable in Configuration Manager in Advanced Search Design. Is there anywhere else I need to make changes or additional steps to make?
