Documentation of approval hierarchy for both performance and compensation

Is there any documentation out there that explains how the approval hierarchy should be set up . We have multiple levels of approval across various business units but there is no documentation that fully explains how it should be configured. The JDE Guide really doesn't explain it very well at all.
