What types of format_MASK can be used on a field

There is a HOW TO 1440752.1 but this only displays

Property Name : FORMAT_MASK

Value : FM999G999G999G999G990D00

It doesn't explain what format is allowed does the FM and G and D mean or do they just appear in the field and the numbers are entered where the 9's are.

can CCYYMMDD/9999 be used?

can there be date validation on it?

or could a slash be used to break the field up 999999999/9999

I can't find where to look this up in a help guide.
