OPM - Lease Termination

Once a lease expires, how can users change status to terminated if the period has closed and the update does not happen prior? We have a list of leases that have expired in previous months that need status updated and all my research has shown that you must amend the lease by changing termination date, but this creates unwanted journal entries.
