Using substitute item in MRP

Hi,

Requirement is in Bill of Material there is Item no A, when there is no availability of Item A system has to check for Item B availability and suggest OP messages based on substitute item. I'm aware substitute functionality will not work for MRP message generation, is there any alternative way to generate message for Item B
