Need advise on running the demo for the PROC precompiler

I've installed the oracle client on a VM running Linux. I've also installed the "examples". I have been following SR 1513183.1. I believe I've successfully ran the "make" command in step 7. From there I don't know what else I need to do.

Has there been a database created?

How do I execute the sample1? I've tried and it returns this error: ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist.

This tells me that it should have created a database somewhere, but I can't find it or have a clue where it would be. Without setting an oracle_sid, how would it connect?
