What would be the best possible way to unassign items from an Inventory organization.

We have close to 5000 items which are assigned to an Inventory Org which we are no longer using. Is there a standard API which can used to get these items unassigned from the IO, ensuring there's no impact on the the item-org assignment for other IO's.

Would end dating the IO from INV setup be a good approach if there's no API or mass update functionality available?
