Setting up a new advanced preference

We are expecting a change in the supply B/P while entering the sales order detail on the basis of quantity. If the quantity exceeds a particular number, the B/P should default to X, else it should be Y. We tried using the inventory commitment by enabling "Enable Effective Qty" option in the preference master. And setups were made with required quantity and UoM. But this has impacted the existing records. Can anyone please help on this matter, how to setup this requirement without creating any issue with the current working. Thanks to respond.
