Will a billing extension on a task override the revenue generation method on the project level?

I am working with a client who has projects that often begin as T&M (so Work/Work) and then it will switch to milestone billing or percent complete (so Cost/Cost or Cost/Event).

I know the Revenue Accrual Method cannot be changed after the fact. Could a billing extension be assigned at the task or top task level to calculate revenue by percent complete and override the Work/Work settings at the project level? Would the project type need to include the Cost/Cost distribution rule, even if it's not set as the default?

I've found quite a bit about not being able to change the revenue accrual method, but nothing about being able to override it with a billing extension.
