GI and DB patches

We are finding that the rollout of CPU patches at GI and DB level on lower and prod env has been taking few months to complete overall. What is the recommendation in terms of applying Database patches quarterly and GI patches at an alternate (less frequent) schedule? Are other customers doing that or do you foresee any issues with that?
