when try to test connection with external SFTP server

When navigating to: Reports and analytics > Browse Catalog > Administration > Manage BI Publisher > FTP > Add server. And after I fill in all the relevant information and click the 'test connection' button I receive the error message:

Could not establish connection. oracle.xdo.delivery.ssh2.SshException: Timeout waiting for response from server.

I can confirm the credentials are correct, via another way we were able to communicate with the SFTP server.
