How can use Workflow to send messages to a Grouped Distribution List?

I am currently getting an error using Send Message Extended in JDESOCHNG when attempting to send messages to a Grouped Distribution List. I would like to know if anyone has had success sending messages to a Grouped Distribution list using JDE Workflow. Is it possible to do in JDESOCHNG or must I develop a custom workflow object that is triggered by a custom application?
