Retirement API vs Retirement interface

Hi,

Oracle provides a Retirement API (appendix R in User Guide) and a Mass Retirement interface table. I only need to do simple retirements without any invoices. What is the main difference between the 2 options? The API that is pl/sql based seems simpler to me. Are there any pitfalls or major benefits in one versus the other?
