Update a system-defined 'amount' DE with a formula?

As part of a new Change Management BP, we have the need to update a system-defined 'amount' DE with a formula. The line item type is Lump Sum and it will not allow updates via formula. We could show another formula DE next to this; however, the user would need to copy/paste date from one DE to another. This is not going to be an acceptable practice.
