Approval Criteria - How to include criteria not on the main record?

We are implementing Fluid Position Management and one of the approval paths has criteria for one set of approvers that is based not only Business Unit, which is on the position data table, but whether the Job Code is in a particular Job Family. Job Family is on the Jobcode table, but I don't think adding the Jobcode table to the Criteria will work?

Has anyone needed a similar approval setup where one of the criteria is not on the record where the data is being updated? If so, how was that managed? Thank you!
