ASM - Pros and Cons on a non-RAC, VM Server
I've used ASM many times over the years on physical servers with physical drives attached, as well as, on RAC servers and have found it to be an excellent tool.
Recently, however, I have been working on virtual servers with virtual disks. These are non-RAC servers. And, I'm wondering if ASM is really helpful in this environment.
Since the virtual disks are on storage arrays that handle the stripping, mirroring, and load balancing, and with the ASM disks designated as "External" what benefit does the ASM provide?
Thanks.
