How to have exiting custom grid formats get copied over to new version

I tried using copy function to copy application version to create new version via copy and also did one creating new version - the custom grid formats did not get copied over to new versions. DO we have to use UDOs to create grid format or just link the new application to the existing UDOs custom grid format. Can you please assist
