Rman backup pieces are unknown to database

Hello,

We have database rman backup pieces not being deleted since August 19th, but Rman backup retention window is 30 days. Today is December 12th, 2022.

Identified a number of backup pieces starting from August 19 to November 30th are not unknown to Rman backups when I tried to recatalog the location of the backups, and that must be the reason they are not being deleted by our daily backup process that also deletes obsolete backups.

However, our catalog database does indicate the oldest backup time is 8/19/2022 5:17:14 AM.

Looking for your advice as to what could have caused the rman backup pieces unknown to the database backups. I can recatalog them to be part of the backups and the obsolete will be removed, but to understand the cause is important for us to prevent the future issues.
