between is not work for a character field having period name

We have period in period_name column of GL_JE_LINES table as bellow:

Des for Dec

I am using period_name between 'Dec-12' and 'Jun-20'

or

period_name between 'Des-12' and 'Jun-20'

This not work as its not a valid month, and return only data for Dec-12 and Jun-20 months.
