What can cause a series of Person Profiles from Profile Management to slowly start deleting?

We are using PeopleSoft 9.2; PT 8.59 current to image 41 and selectively adopted afterward.

We noticed that certain Person Profiles have started disappearing in a sequence slowly over the last couple of months. We don't know of any queued process or anything we have generated concerning the Person Profiles and we cannot figure out why only a few have disappeared.

We were alerted because a staff member reported they were missing data from a profile category. We see the old profile info in various test environments so we know they used to exist. However, In Prod the person's record cannot be opened at all now on the person profile page. The Profiles could not have been manually deleted by the staff members.
