Change Cost Type of a running organization.

We have a organization operational for years now in standard costing . Now it is required to changed to aveage

As much as I understand that there are notes suggesting that costing method once defined to a organization cannot be changed, I would like to understand if friends in community have attempeted this previously.

If yes, what are the likely mechanisms of managing it.
