Apply RU on custom client-only 19c install?

I'm looking at installing Connection Manager and have downloaded the client (19.3 Oracle client for Oracle Linux 8) in preparation for the install. 

If I do a custom install as follows from [response file]:

 oracle.install.client.customComponents="oracle.sqlplus:19.0.0.0.0","oracle.network.client:19.0.0.0.0","oracle.network.cman:19.0.0.0.0","oracle.network.listener:19.0.0.0.0"

Can I/should I apply a release update like I would with a full database server install? 

If so, how would I apply this for a custom client-only install? -run the same server OPatch process even tho not all components were originally installed or would this error on a custom install?
