ASM AU question

Oracle 19.18 on linux rhel7

it states Variable size extents enable support for larger Oracle ASM data files but really doesnt say what that means.

From what I know you set the AU when creating the disk. Normally use the default of 1M but building new servers and Im interested in making the AU larger.

The statement "Variable size extents" is catching me up a little, is this referencing the data file extents and has nothing to do with the AU size?
