OPPM - How to determine which categories are not in use?

We are trying to determine which categories our users are not using to cleanup the system. We can easily determine which categories are updating items/portfolios/scorecards, but there dozens of references to category_id in the database. Does anyone know of a way to analyze this without accidentally deleting categories that are in use throughout the OPPM system?
