Using SQL to Mass Inactivate Items in PeopleSoft

I am seeking advice.

We have a department wanting to inactivate approximately 3,500 items AFTER running INS4000. The report is nearly 4,000 pages. Rather than going through the report and addressing the issues with each item a SQL update of item and business unit item status has been requested. Apparently, this has built up over the years, and the majority of the open transactions will never be processed. I'd like to know what are the risks of doing this SQL update.
