Function of the "Eligible to Work in U.S." flag - Modify a Person[Region Tab]

PS HCM 9.2 PUM 042. - My HR department is wondering what the function of the Eligible to Work in U.S. checkbox is on the USA region on the Modify Person Personal Information page and what causes it to be checked or not. They're also wondering if it is unchecked if an employee will not be paid (for example, for failure to produce necessary documents showing eligibility to work in the U.S. in a timely manner).

We've both looked in online PeopleBooks and it just says " Select if the person is eligible to work in the U.S. " - It doesn't talk about if other processes will update this checkbox upon completion of something (for example the online I-9), or if unchecking will prevent something.
