Workflow, can you update workflow with sql.

Can you update steps in wf as if they were manually approved? Also they would like the transactions they need to approve on one page. Some can get 100 emails a day to approve a single person. I would like to put them all on one page and have the approval button next to each line. So they do not have to hit the link go to the page to be approved, hit approve and then go back to the transation list again. Hope this makes sense
