Non-depot repair of serialized configured item

Currently on 12.2.8 and don't have depot repair. Our current methodology of repairing RMAs has been to use non-standard discrete jobs with a phony item number (no trace-ability of anything done to an item or serial number). However, we are running into a business use-case where we have a serialized configured item that we need to maintain the history if it has been repaired.

Our thought process is create a non-standard discrete job using the configured item number, and have a bill of material that also contains the same configured item number, plus an items that were used in the repair. I am running into an issue in my testing when I try to close our the repair job and I cannot re-use the serial number of the repaired item (currently sitting in inventory) to close out the job. I get an error saying "Serial number xxxxx for item yyyyy already exists, serial state \Resides in Stores\ disallows this transaction.
