Can you import sales tax into JDE without running the tax module?

We are looking to accept taxing from a point of sale system and disabling Vertex. Is it possible to import the tax amounts into JDE along with sales orders without turning on and configuring JDE tax? My gut tells me no because of the accounting rules, but I thought I would ask. This is the first time I've been asked this question in 25 years of consulting.
