What are the disadvantages of setting DTP=TRUE or why the default setting is DTP=FALSE

Recently we were advised to set the service parameter DTP=TRUE as a remedy to row lock contention resulting in session timeout errors. Yes, the setting seems to do the job. The question is why isn't it the default setting i.e. what are the disadvantages of DTP=TRUE
