Field Length Change for delivered record - Best Practice for Campus Solution

Under this navigation:

Set Up SACR>Foundation Tables>Academic Structure>Academic Plan Table

We use a delivered record ACAD_PLAN_TBL that contains two description fields which is defined to have 100 char length. Can someone please guide what is the best practice to have the length increased in order it is not overwritten during patches or Upgrade.
