Auto switching between components

I have a question about being able to plan for one component or another automatically in R3482 or R3483.

Here's the situation: I make a widget. For this widget, I can use component 1 or component 2—while they are different enough to need two item numbers, either can be used to make the widget (that is, one or the other, not both for the same widget). The widget's bill of material has other items on it, but those do not change like component 1 and 2.

Now, I had to go through arduous processes to get component 1 and component 2 certified to use to make the widget. Also, if I do not use one of the components enough, I will have to go through the arduous process again to recertify that component; this is an expensive and time-consuming situation.
