impact of changing custom data dictionary field length

hi,

would like to know if it is advisable to change the length of a custom data dictionary field and what would be the steps that ensure that there is no adverse impact. The change to the custom DD field, which is Numeric, would be to increase its' field length. It is currently being used across a number of custom objects (including Interactive Apps, Batch Apps, NERs, Tables).
