SVM: "resync in progress" preventing disk replacement

X4600 M2 - Solaris 10 5/08
Trying to replace a failed HDD which has gone <drive type unknown> but cannot detach the submirror.
Even a '-f' results in a "resync in progress" message & no detach.
Mirrors showing as 'needs maintenance' not 'resyncing' in metastat -a
Any suggestions? TIA
