AP4600 firmware upgrade

Good Day,

The client currently has 2 HA 4600 SBC's - we would like to upgrade them from version 8.1p12 - 9.0.

What would be the best approach to upgrade - do we upgrade the standby first from 8.1 to 9.0 and then failover and do the active node. Or would it be best to upgrade both gradually example, upgrade the standby from 8.1 to 8.3 then failover and do the active, fail back over and upgrade the standby to 8.4 and so forth until we reach version 9. I'm worried there might be compatibility issues when we try to fail because the big gap between the two versions if we upgrade the standby to version 9 first and still
