How do you monitor a job through an agent down situation?

I am running a job through OEM that updates encryption parameters for an agent (I have another post about this). The issue is the job (whether it is an OS script running or multitask job), the running job is suspended or task fails if/when the agent is down. How does the Gold Image update work around this? I assume the agent has to go down to switch to the new Gold Image. I have been able to update Gold Images and have the job remove the old software and still report every step accurately. Am I missing something?
