How can we prevent the items that are returned for Advance Exhange from changing owner to Internal

Our business process for Advance Exhange requires that the item being returned for inspection/repair, that the ownership remains with Customer. Currently, once the item is received, the ownership changes to Internal. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
