Material Status Control where reservations exist

We have a business requirement where inventory items of a certain lot need to be placed on hold across the inventory organisation (regardless of reservations) if a QA concern is highlighted. The main reason why we would want to ignore reservations would be to be prevent a specific lot of an item being shipped out to a customer. The standard functionality does not seem to be support this so my question is have other EBS users experienced this issue and what have they done as solution.
