What is the impact of adding a new segment to Item KFF?

System Item KFF is currently two segments structure, and we want to add a third segment to it. We have items currently defined and transacted using the 2 segments structure. Wanted to know the impact of adding the third segment. Would the recommendation be to add the 3rd segment as optional segment to avoid any data corruption/ or existing items updates?
