Exporting OVA to external hdd Issue

I didnt realise the ova export would generate temporary snapshot on the host.. My VM has used space of almost 950 GB and the free space on the host is 500 GB only. Im trying to export to a external hard drive and it completes without any error or warnings but the ova export on the external drive is saved as vm.ova.tmp and the snapshot is still present on the VM with snapshot's disk status being as illegal. Can you suggest if there is way to export VM ova without snapshot or any other way?
